Zakat FAQs

Who is required to pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory for every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold for one complete lunar year. The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth one must have before they are liable to pay Zakat.

What is the Nisab value?

The Nisab is calculated based on the value of gold or silver. As of current rates, it's approximately:

  • Gold: 87.48 grams (3 ounces)
  • Silver: 612.36 grams (21 ounces)

You can use the current market value of either gold or silver to determine if your wealth meets the Nisab threshold.

What types of wealth are Zakatable?

Zakat is payable on:

  • Cash (in bank accounts or at home)
  • Gold and silver (jewelry, bullion, coins)
  • Business stock and merchandise
  • Investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds)
  • Money lent to others
  • Agricultural produce and livestock (with specific conditions)
When should I pay my Zakat?

Zakat becomes due one lunar year (Hawl) after your wealth first reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold. Many Muslims choose to pay their Zakat during Ramadan for greater blessings, but it can be paid at any time once it becomes due.

How does Helpmuslim distribute Zakat?

Helpmuslim distributes Zakat strictly according to the eight categories mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60). Our projects are reviewed by Islamic scholars to ensure Sharia compliance.
